Jewelry for Jesus!

She sold it all.  She had a big sales job, big house in Atlanta with private swimming pool and tennis courts on her property, driving a Jaguar and a Porche.  She had recently became a Christian at the age of thirty-seven and her life was changed.  She no longer desired to go bar hopping with the girls, she no longer desired the alcohol that had began to take over her life.  She was free from her life of depression and searching for a husband.  Her life was different and everyone that knew her could see it.  She no longer had a trash mouth, she had a new mouth that God changed to give glory to Himself.  She put her house on the market and she gave or sold all her stuff away.  Her friends were worried about her, they were afraid her house would not sell and that she would be left without any furniture and stuff.  She had many yard sales selling and giving away things out of this professionally designed home.  She sold thousands of dollars worth of beautiful furniture for next to nothing, just to get rid of it.  When her house sold and all her things were gone, she boarded a plane with two suitcases bound for China.

God had led her to China where she was a missionary.  He soon led her to Thailand where she is now.  She has been in Thailand for almost five years.  She has a business in Bangkok going into bars and brothels and offering a “new” job to the young prostitutes there.  She offers each prostitute a new job of making jewelry in exchange for a job of selling her body.  In four and a half years this mission has rescued eighty women from this hard life.  This business provides them a stable job making this jewelry and they arrive each day for work with a worship service and Scripture reading.  Many of the women have been changed by the Gospel and now have a right standing relationship with God.  The environment these women walk into each day is positive, encouraging and supportive of these precious young women and girls.

This woman, Rebecca, has sold everything she had to live radical for Jesus.  Jesus says that before we can be His disciple (or a Christian) we must abandon everything and follow Him.  Because she left everything she had, she now rescues women from a life of hell, and watches Jesus rescue them from an eternity of hell.  She is truly an example of not only living radical for Jesus, but what being a Christian is all about.  If we have never abandoned all, then we are not His disciple.

It was so nice seeing many women walking around church this morning with their jewelry on.  It is a reminder each time I see one of her pieces that God uses His people to reach others when we walk away from everything this world uses to entice us away from the cross!

Luke 14:33  “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”

Matthew 6:19-20  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

“Thank you, Jesus, for saving and loving us.  Thank you for loving the people of Thailand enough to send missionaries to share with them Your love.  Thank you for people like Rebecca that remind us that we should all have a Gospel-driven life and never hold on to our earthly treasures.  Please give me a heart focused on You, rather than this world.  Amen.”

Each January, Rebecca returns to the states to share her testimony and sell the jewelry that is made through this ministry. The money goes toward materials to make the jewelry and to pay salaries to keep the girls from returning to prostitution for their livelihood.  Please pray for Rebecca Simmons and that God would bless her ministry in reaching these girls.  If you would like to donate to her ministry please send me an email and I will let you know how!

I have my earrings on today and I love them, and what they remind me of! I am so glad I had the opportunity to come hear her story and what she is doing for the Kingdom of God in Thailand! Thanks for inviting me, Kari! 🙂
