SBC Pastor’s Wives Conference 2009
Sep 16
This was my first year getting to attend the Southern Baptist Convention. I got excited to find out that there is a conference for pastor’s wives. This was only the fifth year for the women. This years’ theme was “Women of Truth.” I had never before heard of Mary Kassian, and published author and speaker of women’s conferences. She was greatly used by God for the purpose of teaching the women how to be Women of Truth, or perhaps, she was used of God just just to teach me how to better become a woman of truth.
Here is some of the nine pages of notes I took from her lecture. I pray that you can benefit as I have from her words of wisdom as I have. She derived these lessons from Titus 2:1-5
10 Life Commitments of Women of Truth
#1 Radical Devotion
A woman of truth will have a reverence for God. She will have a deep love and respect for Him. It is all about God- promoting and not self- promoting. She is sold out, poured out and her life is sacrificed to Jesus Christ. She gave an example of a missionary lady named Amy Carmichael. Amy lived in the late 1800’s and her mission was to rescue the young ladies forced into prostitution from a young age in India. She would rescue these women and provide a sanctuary where she would share the Gospel with them and disciple them. She wrote a letter to pastors asking if they had any women that could help her at her mission. She asked the pastors if they had any women in their congregations that were sold out, self-sacrificing, devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ, wholly committed to a life of service to Him that could help her. The pastors wrote back that not only did they not have any women that fit this description in their congregations, but that they did not even know any women like this.
#2 Sound Doctrine
A woman of truth knows what the Word of God says. She has sunk her teeth into the depths of God’s Word. She studies and works at accurately presenting the Word of God. Women that are strong theologically can determine good from evil. Feelings take us the wrong way. We do not need week willed, spineless women. Satan tries to lead us away from truth, he is crafty and subtle. He shows us something attractive, yet it pulls us away from the Lord.
#3 The Family Plan
The woman of truth will have a love for husband and children. She is committed to upholding the marraige as the message of God’s love displayed. God created the family and the family was God’s idea. Christ is the husband that gave His life for the church, His bride. God created male and female, marriage and children as His parable to the Gospel. A husband that would love His wife, seek after her, and die for her.
All women should value the family even if they are single. By keeping herself pure, she is loving her future husband. All women, young, old, single, married, widowed, should love and respect the family as God’s design. A woman of truth loves the family. To be a husband lover is to respect the Gospel. When women tear down men and talk ugly about men, they are not being husband lovers. She honors her own husband and also the marriage commitment of those around her.
#4 Intentional Loving
A woman of truth learns to be self-controlled and self-disciplined. She builds bridges and barriers. Bridges are to help her reach the places she needs to go. Barriers are to keep her from the places she does not need to go. A bridge could be getting up earlier, going to bed earlier, keep a task list, etc… A barrier could be restricting internet time and/or access, dating standards, dressing modestly, taking measures to protect marriages such as not going on business trips with men other than her husband, etc….
#5 Godly Character
A woman of truth will have purity and holiness in all she does. she keeps her eyes on the right standard instead of comparing herself to others. She has a standard of perfection!
#6 Womanly priorities (this one is my personal favorite)
A woman of truth is busy at home. She delights in her role as “home creator.” She creates and manages a welcoming home- a guardian of the home. She has a devotion to home life. She creates her home to be a place that is physically and spiritually welcoming. A place that gives people a sense of how they long for an eternal home, a home that reflects Heaven. She welcomes strangers. When she honors and values the home it will bless her husband and children and give them a taste of what Heaven will be like. She keeps an orderly home.
(I think today we view our home as “our own personal space.” We do not offer our personal home for people that may need a warm shower, a warm meal, or a soft bed. We generally close our door to strangers and needy, yet most of us have a “welcome” mat outside our front door.)
#7 Womanly Purpose
A woman of truth has kindness. She is a kind person that is generous and does good things for others. She “helps” and does not “hinder.” Helping is the opposite of hindering. Women were created in Genesis by God to be “helpers” to her husband. She comforts, shields, protects, supports, builds confidence, encourages, rescues the poor and needy, etc…
# 8 Womanly Disposition
A woman of truth has a beautiful, gentle and quiet spirit. She is a steel magnolia, which means beauty with boldness, sweetness with stamina. She does what is good and right and she does not give in to fear. She is not swayed by what others say. She is mild, friendly and considerate. She gives other people a break even though she may be mistreated.
Gentleness is like a nursing mother that is calming a fussy baby. She may still have an extroverted personality, yet a quiet and gentle spirit. She should have an inclination to bend toward submissiveness.
#9 Spiritual Mothering
A woman of truth trains the younger women. She is a teacher of good and beautiful things. May Kassian said, “I believed it was good, long before I saw that is is beautiful.”
All women are called t motherhood. Even if a woman never marries or physically bears a child from her womb, she should be giving life spiritually. She should strive to be a spiritual mother. The call to motherhood is for married, single, young and old. Our goal should be to always bear fruit and give life, even when I am old and grey.
#10 Display the Beauty of the Gospel
A woman of truth should have the visible and invisible attributes of God. Male and female roles point to the sacrifice and character of Christ. Both roles exalt the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
It was a wonderful conference. I am thankful I was able to attend this event. Thank you honey for keeping the children and encouraging me to go.
